Splice - An intersection between natural and man-made materials
Date: September 2023
Completed at Victoria University of Wellington
Materials: cardboard, rocks
What happens when you try to bridge the gap between natural and synthetic materials? That was the question we had to answer for this project. I wanted to explore the overlap between my chosen materials; cardboard and rocks. Through the process of researching precedents, I found a common visual between the two.
The layering of sedimentary rocks was very reminiscent of how cardboard looks when it’s stacked up in layers. Expanding on this idea, I started experimenting with stacked layers of both cardboard and flat stones I found at a local park. I wanted the materials to blend together in a way that made them look like one unified object, so I made sure to use rocks of similar sizes and shapes and carved the layered cardboard to match the imagined contour of the space between rock layers. The result was this final piece, with a smooth transition between rock and cardboard, a perfect visual blend of natural and man-made materials.
